Anticipation and planning

These skills are found in all areas of driving. You should always be aware of what is going on around you while planning what you need to do in response. Plan ahead to respond safely to others’ actions to do this you need to follow this routine as it is key to all aspects of driving. Mirror,signal ,manoeuvre, position, speed, look.(m,s,m,p,s,l).

M – use your mirrors to check the position of traffic behind an around you.

S – signal to show others what you intend to do.

M – a change in speed or position, slowing down, stopping , turning.

P – position your car correctly for the move you want to make.

S – adjust your speed so it is appropriate for the manoeuvre.

L – have a final look to check its safe before you start to steer.

(1) Identify hazards from clues and respond to them safely.

(2) recognise times, places and conditions which mean there is a higher risk. This includes weather conditions.

(3) Use scanning techniques to enable you to plan ahead so you can prioritise how you will deal with the hazards you encounter.

Anticipate the actions of all types of road users to do this you need to be familiar with the risks associated with each type.

Cyclists

Take care when crossing cycle lanes, watch for cyclists passing on your left , don’t pass a cyclist near a junction they may change direction suddenly and give adequate clearance when passing them.

Motorcyclists

Look out for motorcyclists especially at junctions and in slow moving traffic.

Pedestrians

Take special care with the very young, the elderly,and those with disabilities, they may not see you and could step out suddenly. Give way to pedestrians.

Animals

Give horse riders as much room as possible and pass slowly . Do not sound the horn close to animals.

Emergency vehicles

Check where they are coming from and try to keep out of their way. If necessary pull in and stop don’t panic and be observant.

If you plan ahead you should be able to anticipate potential hazardous situations. If you are prepared you minimise the element of surprise, leaving you to deal with situations safely in a controlled way.
